UHR calls for immediate rethinking of President Trump’s executive order
The Norwegian Association of Higher Education Institutions (UHR) fully supports the content of the press release from the European University Association (EUA) and the online petition in opposition to President of the United States of America, Donald Trump’s Executive Order (EO) for a 90-day suspension of visas and other immigration benefits to all nationals of Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Yemen, Libya and Somalia.
The suspension has a series of unintended and problematic consequences, which now are unfolding. Suspending everyone holding a passport from certain countries, including scientific and academic personnel, from entering the lead country in higher education and research is both discriminatory towards individuals and undermines the global academic community. Furthermore, it threatens the academic freedom of both scientists and universities. As EUA, UHR calls on US President Trump to recall the executive order and acknowledge the overall importance of global mobility, free flow of knowledge and openness for society as a whole.
